FAQs about NHS 24

Does the nurse have access to my medical records?

When you call us, the Call Handler will ask you if the Nurse can look at your Emergency Care Summary, the Nurse can ONLY view this information if you agree to this.

Your Emergency Care Summary will tell the Nurse:

  • Your date of birth (including the year you were born)
  • The name of the Doctor’s surgery that you are registered with
  • A reference number that identifies you. This is called a CHI number.

Information about any bad reactions that you’ve had to medicines that your Doctor knows about. For example if your Doctor knows that you are allergic to a certain drug, then this information would be in your Emergency Care Summary.

Your Emergency Care Summary is copied from your Doctor’s computer system and stored electronically. Our Nurse Advisors are able to access this important information, but only if you say that they can. If you agree they will look at the information on their computer when they speak to you.

You can find out more about more about your Emergency Care Summary by reading our article "Your Emergency Care Summary - What is it?".
