Clinical Governance is a framework through which NHS Organisations are accountable for continuously improving the quality of their service and safeguarding high standards of care, by creating an environment in which excellence in care will flourish.
It is important to remember Clinical Governance is:
Effective clinical governance requires appropriate structures and processes that position quality of care at the forefront to be in place. Through a robust infrastructure, with clear lines of accountability, quality of care can be monitored and assurance provided to the NHS 24 Board and Chief Executive that effective and safe services are being delivered.
The Chief Executive is accountable to the Board for clinical governance through ensuring suitable local arrangements are in place and are integrated with existing structures such as directorates. Within NHS 24 responsibility for Clinical Governance has been delegated to the Nurse Director, who further cascade this responsibility throughout the management structure of the organisation, encouraging locally responsive approaches to performance and quality improvements.
